Gardening Seminar
Saturday, April 09th, 2017
Starting at 1pm
Topic - "Basket Weave and Flower Combos"
JoAnn Hemple is a local basket weaver and owner of The Spoke ‘N’ Reed along with her husband Bill. The Spoke ‘N’ Reed was established in 1993 and reorganized in 1999. Our baskets are woven from reed, which is the inner core of the rattan plant, rather than hardwoods. We dye our own reed and each basket is custom-stained. The baskets are very sturdy and can be used for a variety of functions or left as purely decorative. Some of our more popular sellers are bread baskets that come with warming stones, a variety of wine baskets and small-to-large market baskets. JoAnn is a member of the Missouri Basketweavers Guild. Bill is the stain mixologist and mixes the stains to coordinate with the dyed reed in the baskets. He also cuts some of the wood bases.
JoAnn has taught basket weaving to several girl scout troops as well as private individuals. She has designed a number of baskets and sold at juried art shows including The Best of Missouri Market and craft fairs in the St. Louis area and southern Illinois. Spoke ‘N’ Reed baskets have been sold in Kimmswick and local gift shops in both St. Louis and Columbia, IL.
